Nourishment
(ceramic, maple)
The modern industrial age is growing increasingly distant from natural systems that support life as we know it. I am interested in exploring the interconnectivity between person and environment using utilitarian, earth-bound mediums. Hence, I created dinnerware by wheel throwing clay dishes and a whittling wood utensil.
The purpose of utilitarian objects is to develop a relationship with the earth-born tool and foster sentimental value with each use. It is a tool to nourish life and support the food system, both physically and metaphorically. It strives to engage the participant with the natural world and to think more carefully about natural systems and nourishment we receive from the earth.
With the creation of the work, I found myself increasingly mindful of food habits and its relation to mental and physical health. With more attention towards the process of making tools to consume food, I was able to rethink my own relationship with food itself. I paid more attention to the process of cooking and to think of food as medicine. The creative process brought me closer to earth's bounty and how I think about sustaining myself.
